Two islands, two different holidays

Providenciales and Grand Turk sit 120km apart.

Almost everything on this site happens on one island or the other, and the Columbus Passage between them is a flight, not a taxi. Pick the island first and the day plans itself.

Providenciales

Grace Bay, and the reef a swim from the sand.

The resort island. Catamarans leave the beach after breakfast, the reef starts a few strokes out, and the mangrove flats behind Leeward hold the clear kayaks and the rock iguanas. Nearly every water day on these islands starts here.

Grand Turk

A lighthouse road, a wreck reef and no traffic lights.

Seven square miles of donkeys, salinas and Bermudian shutters, with a wall that drops away a few hundred metres offshore. The cruise pier is at the south end, the old town is a slow half hour north, and the way to cover it is a rented cart.

Where the days go

What these islands are actually famous for.

A beach that tops the world lists, a reef you can reach by kayak, an uninhabited cay full of rock iguanas, and a fleet of carts on the other island. Start with the ones people fly in for.

Behind Leeward

The mangrove flats are the quietest water in Providenciales.

A few minutes from the marina the sea goes glass-flat and knee-deep over turtle grass. Clear hulls make the whole floor visible, most trips carry on to the iguana cay, and the drone shots come with the better operators.

What it costs

60 tours

Shared snorkel runs, cart rentals, the tram round Cockburn Town and an hour on a parasail.

$150–300
63 tours

Half-day catamarans, the clear kayak and iguana combinations, jet ski circuits out to the wreck.

$300 and up
57 tours

Private charters and yachts, priced for the boat rather than the seat. Four people in and the maths changes.

Only here

Three things you can only do in the Turks and Caicos.

Reef snorkeling and sunset sails belong to the whole Caribbean. Clear hulls over the Leeward flats, a cay run by iguanas and a bay that lights up after the full moon belong to these islands.

Glass floors

The Clear Kayak

Polycarbonate hulls turned a routine mangrove paddle into the thing people book the trip around. Behind Leeward the water runs a metre deep over pale sand and turtle grass, so a clear boat shows rays, juvenile sharks and conch without anyone getting wet. Go on the morning run: the wind gets up after lunch and a rippled surface hides the floor.

A cay of its own

Little Water Cay

The Turks and Caicos rock iguana lives nowhere else on earth and the cay off Leeward holds one of the last strong populations. Boardwalks keep feet off the nesting sand, and the animals long ago stopped caring about visitors. Most boat trips fold the cay into a half day with a snorkel stop, which is the right way to see it.

Three nights a month

The Glow Worms

For a few nights after each full moon, marine worms spawn in the shallows off Providenciales and the water flashes green for around half an hour after sunset. The boats run on that calendar and nothing else. If your dates fall wrong, the champagne sunset sail is the consolation, and it is a good one.

Book before you fly

Four Turks and Caicos bookings that will not wait.

Most of these islands can wait until you land. These four cannot: they run on the moon, the cruise schedule, or a single boat with one booking a day.

  1. 01Drive GDT – Golf Cart RentalsGrand Turk keeps a small fleet of carts and a single ship can land several thousand people before nine.
  2. 02Turks and Caicos Half-Day Luxury Private Yacht CharterOne boat, one booking a day. Either your date is open or it is not.
  3. 034-Hour Catamaran Sail and Snorkel Tour from Grace BayThe half-day catamarans run one or two departures and the resorts fill them first.
